FAKK2
good, ending bad.
Review by Dave "Marauder" Kratky, Aug 19/2000.
I normally hate third person type hack n' slashing games, with the exception of Drakken. And now FAKK2. Developers keep coming out with 3rd person shooters like this I may forsake QIII & Tribes. :) Allrighty! As I mentioned above, I usually don't like these "tombraider-eske" type games. I'm more of a FPS or RTS type guy. Not big on the third person stuff. Drakken and this game may have changed that forever. The first thing I noticed about this game is that the graphics are absolutely sweet. Easily the match of anything I've seen in any other game.
I was especially impressed with the fact that they used the Quake III engine to make this game.... Which looks NOTHING like Quake III. Well, ok, the water and the "shiny" textures on walls and other surfaces are what gives it away if you've ever played QIII before. (And of course we've ALL played QIII, right children? Ok. Good.) The second thing I noticed was that the voice acting actually didn't suck ass. They actually seem to have spent a few pesos to make the game sound really good. The dialogue isn't going to make Speilberg jelous, but hey, it's a game. Another interesting note. This is the first time I think I've ever seen a pregnant woman in a game. Check it out. As soon as I saw this, I just knew something evil was going to happen to her. And it did. :) (I love being right about stuff like that.)
Anyhows, the basic premise of the game is that you (Julie) wasted this guy named Lord Tyler a while back. Once you killed the chief baddy, you retired to the planet of Eden to rebuild. (You just KNOW that a planet with a name like that is asking for a good kick right in the teeth.) Your people have discovered that the water on this planet provides the key to eternal life. No one ever ages. Soon you all live in eternal happiness. Well, untill that pesky alien invasion force shows up to kill everyone and take over the planet. That's right! Mr. Gith the big nasty guy wants the planet and it's secrets which will allow him to dominate the universe. (Insert normal global domination plot here, add evil laughter, you'll get the idea.)
You naturally set out to right the wrongs and kill every damn thing that gets in your way while you're at it. (I mean if we just sat around and TALKED nice about it, it'd be a pretty dull game wouldn't it?) Along your way, you'll journey through massive destroyed villages, swamps, cliff sides, river areas, even other dimensions. Overall the level design was excellent, tho as I've mentioned perhaps 1 or 2 million times before, I really don't like jumping puzzles. Strangely enough, I just kept loading and saving with this one.... And didn't really get too frustrated with the jumping and climbing puzzles. They're just hard enough to make you work at it, but not stupid hard. I really like that. My puzzle solving skillz died with Space Quest III. The detail on the level is simply stunning. Unlike many games, the maps actually feel real. I was looking for things that seemed out of place or "off" and really couldn't find anything other than a few flickering textures here and there. Those may have been caused by the new drivers I just loaded for my Annihilator 2. The patch that just came out may help with that as well, I'll have to load it and take a look again. Even areas where the player normally would not go are detailed well. The level design team really outdid themselves with this game. I mentioned above that the graphics are excellent. Here's some examples of just that. Check out that creamy 3D rendered sweetness. The texturing and modeling guys must have worked over time.
One thing I REALLY liked. Ritual apologized on their web site for having a few bugs in the game. (Mind you, I played all the way thru. The memory leak bug required me to reset my machine a few times, but no biggie there.) Their stated goal was to have a completely bug free game. I'd say they came as close as is humanly possible. :) About here I ran out of comments about the game. So, more screenshots and advice: Just go buy it and play it. It's worth it. :) And so few games are these days!
The Main Bosses Quick Tips & Hints - This game is basically a rail shooter. You seldom, if ever, return the way you came. Always go forward. If you seem stuck, just look around, chances are the exit is above or below you. :) - Kill the reapers with the chainsaw sword. Just run right up and let 'em have it. Otherwise you'll be forever dueling them. - Once you get Lord Tyler down to 0% on his health meter, use his own sword to finish him off. Keep moving or die. - Have fun, and hope more maps are coming soon. :)
