Fragtopia 2001 Update
The PlanetQuake staff have all gotten together to help administer the ownage at the Fragtopia 2001 event.
  — by PlanetQuake Staff

It's been nothing but ownage here at the Fragtopia 2001 event, and your PlanetQuake staff has been right in the middle of it. Everything started nice and early on Saturday with some fun LAN action with all the attendants' favorite games. While we watched players show up and set up their computers, we also had the pleasure of meeting "Kathrean", our Be Our Guest contest winner. We had a great time chatting and enjoying the atmosphere, followed by a dinner of that fine cuisine from Ronald McDonald's place.

But when everyone got settled in, it was time for us to get out the swag and start the carnage. We started out with 2v2 a team deathmatch tournament that lasted almost the entirety of Saturday. The competition was great in the final rounds, with q3dm6 and q3dm7 being the two battlegrounds of choice for fast and furious 15 minute matches.

All of the rounds were a blast for everyone involved. While some of the matches really stick out as exciting and a total blast to spectate (the Team Bot vs Crack the Cardboard match comes to mind), all of the rounds were fun to play. We should even have some demos up for you later, but for right now here are the results.

Place Team Players
1st Bowl of Rice Dy-Syng, insano
2nd Crack the Cardboard Socrates, Soulja
3rd Team Bot Test, Hoax
4th Darkside Ni3, Darth-V
5th Them Archangel, Jediknight
6th Crusty Donuts crust, Donut911
6th Us Tippmann, d0zer
8th Holy Rollers Test Subject, Forktail
8th SaK Syntax, Kathreane

Of course, those first three places didn't go home with just bragging rights, we had some awesome prizes for the 2v2 Team Deathmatch.

The first place team, Bowl of Rice, walked home with 400 dollars cash and two GameSpy T-Shirts.

The second place team, Crack the Cardboard, took home a nice GameSpy swag pack containing a couple GameSpy T-Shirts, two GameSpy hats, and even a couple of GameSpy mugs.

Then the third place team, Team Bot, raked in a couple Quake 3: Arena t-shirts from id Software.

The tournament went smooth and deadly, and the PlanetQuake staff wants to congratulate all the FRAGtopia Quake 3: Arena players for a job well done. After the 2v2 tournament awards presentation, it was time for some silly fun in a big free for all. We set up a big server on The Bouncy Map (q3dm16) with the winner getting a copy of Serious Sam. Fifteen minutes later after everyone joined in for more craziness than most mere mortals can handle, insano walked away with the prize after seriously pounded everyone that even came kind of close. The FFA was fast, furious, and everything a wild Quake 3: Arena free for all is supposed to be.

After the late night FFA madness, it was time for the PQ team to get a little shuteye, before the 1v1 event for big money and prizes to start on Sunday.

Of course, we're here now on Sunday, and the 1v1 seeding is just about to start. You'll hear and see more from the even as it happens right here on PlanetQuake. Until then, here are some pics so far from FRAGtopia that you can check out and wish you were here.

Next: Photos from the event.
