Well I'm back, sorry for the lack of news updates, been going through some upgrades on my computer that wiped both my hard drives. Anywayz on with the news.

I will be posting a review soon of a new case I picked up, the Antec 1030, been running the case for a week now and it definetly has seemed to drop all my temps by 5 or 6 degrees. I'm doing some mods to it also, just waiting for the parts to arrive then I will show it all to the world.

A little something to go along with Marauder's "Office XP" rant. Ever wonder how you could totally disabled your operating system just by changing a few parts in your computer? Well wonder no more, Windows XP is coming and it will make all your worst nightmares come true, make sure you keeps the lights on this ones scary.

How do you like your motherboard done? rare, medium rare or well done? Just set the dial and watch it cook :). Quite a strange Idea but neat none the less.

On a sad note, well not really, Voodoo Extreme will be down for a few days, they seem to be updating their site and giving it a revamp.

Woohoo now all the enjoyment of the BSOD can be seen on 64bit processors coming soon. Come on everyone join the fun.

Here's a little rant going on over at the Mad Onion forums about wether or not 3dfx will be back, sad, very sad, I too use to think in such foolish ways but then I was shown the true ways of the force.... da I mean the "Geforce" :).

More news later stay tuned...

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Yeah, it turned into a rant sure enough. I knew it. I just knew it.

Wow. Look at all the work I've gotten done with just a day off work. I should slack more often. :)

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)
Never mind. I WAS going to try the online rental thing, but it doesn't support Windows 2000. Fools. Fools all.

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Well, I was sorta thinking about buying Office XP and giving it a shot. However I had heard about this like "Change your system, need a new serial number" "feature" dealie from MS that will somehow prevent pirating. It happened to a guy from ZDnet a few days ago.. and he was on the road. Well, in a plane actualy.... Oh, and he hadn't done anything to the machine. Woops. Bad press for MS. :)

"Why did they do that? Here's what the help screen said: "Due to a significant change in your computer configuration from when Microsoft Office was installed and activated, some important information about your computer needs to be restored, and the product needs to be reactivated to continue to function properly."

That sort of message would cause me to head down to Microsoft headquarters with my vendor appreciation bat.

Argh. This is going to become an article or a rant, I can feel it right now, building up.

Stupid MS.

Wired News has something that may or may not turn your crank. Online PC game rentals. Wanna try that game out before you buy it? (Yes, you can just keep your smartass Warez comments to yourself junior.) Why not rent that bad boy, try it out online and see what you think? Apparently they have a technology that "streams" the game to your hard drive in chunks (Hah! No pirating untill someone writes a util to assemble those chunks... Give the pirates a few weeks. :) and allows you to play online. Could be interesting, expecially as they then credit your rental back towards your purchase of the game itself. Take a read, might be something to look for. EB has a link on their main page as we speak. I'm going to go try Serious Sam and see how it works, and what my time to launch is.

Cyan Worlds, a company founded by one of the guys who brought you a little game called Myst (You may have heard of it) is working on a MMPORPG. Take a look, nice site, and the screenies look hella good. It will require broadband to play, which is an interesting change. Will be interesting to see if the thing flies for them.

More later. :)

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Rune just sent me a link to an amazing article on Tom's Hardware about the new nVidia nForce chipset for motherboards. My god. I'd heard about this little fella, but I'd never seen a big write up.. Until now. Go. Read it. Live in awe and await the day you can get one.

The thing I like the most about this board is it's integrated sound chip. It's the most powerfull audio chip on the consumer market today, smoking Creative's cards hands down from the sounds of it. I LIKE, hell, I LOVE! when people kick Creative right in the ass with steel toed jackboots. One of my long time bitches about Creative has been the fact that (in my opinion) they haven't done anything of significance since the release of the SB Live!...... And even the Live! isn't all that impressive. They add reverb to sounds. Woo. Hoo.

The Aureal cards, in my most humble opinion, were head and shoulder technologically above the Creative stuff. Regretably they never caught on, and Aureal followed the 3Dfx business plan of putting oneself out of said business.

Maybe we'll finally see some inovation from the guys at VIA, Intel and Creative, out of survival instinct if nothing else. Face it, the chipset market and audio market have sucked ass for the longest time. Competition is excellent, and I can hardly wait to get my hands on one of these bad boys and test it out.

Oh, and Microsoft asks.. WTF do YOU wanna go today?

Marauder out.

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Incidentally, I WAS going to play Anarchy online, but now I'm not so sure...... It's pretty, and it's apparently more adictive than cool refreshing crack.. But it's also $70 to buy it... And $20 per month CDN to play. That's a pretty good chunk of change to handle every month, even for a rich, executive style playboy such as myself. Hmmmmmm....

Oh, as an interesting side note: Rune went out and bought a Elsa GeForce 3. I also hate him, though I'm unable to explain why.

Incidentally: Reverend, one of my teammates just sent me a nice compliment. He rates me as just under the big G upstairs. Woot! ;) That's just gonna swell my head like a ripe watermellon.

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Hidee ho neighboreenos! I'm actually taking a day offa work for the first time in about 7 years. Woot! No work for Marauder! No work for Marauder!

And so I am sitting in front of my computer, in my boxers at this time of the day, slouching with a huge pile of pop cans next to me... My 20" fan blowing across me, listening to old C64 and Amiga MP3 remixes writing and talking with different people on ICQ. Could the world be a better place?

It's hot as hell, so I don't really feel much like going outside, as my pasty gamer complexion burns to a crisp easily.

New review is up for Emperor: Battle for Dune. Good game, but certainly nothing special or new here.

And now I shall go away for the long weekend. So long suckers! :)

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

We should shortly have an interview up and posted with Hatch from Playnet. Looking forward to his answers to my typically zany and wacky (yes, they're both Zany AND Wacky!) interview questions of death. (tm)

Interestingly, shortly after I posted the news that my god damned computer had crashed during an interview (A motherboard swap seems to have fixed that particular issue... Wondering if my A7V doesn't really like the kinds of speeds I was subjecting it to..... 1.3 ghz and all.) I got a message from Penguinboy James asking me if I knew that I had talked to "THE" Hatch.... As in "THE WARBIRDS DEV GUY HATCH"

Yes. I was aware of it. Since I'm always trying to get James arrested for something I immediately let Hatch know that he should start locking his doors at night and burning his trash. He has a fanboy. :))

Speaking of WWIIO, I played yesterday for 4 hours, had no crashes and only one disconnect. The new patch seems to have solved quite a number of annoying issues. Here's the list:

====================
World War Two Online
====================
ver# 0111
Thanks to all of you who have soldiered through this rough start we've had during the initial launch of WWIIOL. Your continued support during these times will insure that this game lives onto it's full potential. This version addresses a few issues brought to light during the initial release.

-Fixed a joystick error culling bug that cut input from a device that sent any errors through. We upped the amount of errors culled to shut down the device and this should fix folks that "lost JS input" after a bit of play.

-Fixed a shadow calculating bug that was drawing shadows for vehicles that were not within your visible range. This should help in increasing overall performance. Clearly this will not apply to a client with shadow size set to "0" from within "settings'exe".

-Fixed a loading paradigm that held the connection validation segment until the end of the initial loading cycle, as well as displayed NO error message. This allowed a player to go through the lengthy loading cycle and then fail on connect attempt with no feedback. Now the connect will occur at the front of the cycle, and a player will know right away if the attempt was a success.

-Fixed a list error in the settings app that allowed a player to select invalid resolutions and experience severe UI anomalies that were destructive to basic functionality.

-Fixed an issue for Win95 users that failed to play the intro movies. Win95 users should experience identical functionality to other OS in that regard now.

-Enhanced the update ranges for various vehicle types (incl troops) so that you don't recieve updates on vehicles outside the range at which they become visible to you.

-Re-vamped settings.exe with 3 defaults. One for max performance, one for max visual, and one that is a "fence straddle" of the two giving decent performance as well as nicer graphic qualities. NOTE: Settings.exe is where you will gain the MOST PERFORMANCE INCREASES. SET IT TO PERFORMANCE FOR THE BEST FRAME RATES IN GAME. Although there are a lot of tweaks and changes in this version, your system specs and drivers may give you very different performance figures from others with the same settings.

Again, your patience during the rocky rollout was instrumental in keeping the team motivated. Thank you for your support in making WWIIOL come to life!

Woot! Framerates are way up as well. The game is now fun. :)

So. Thinking that writable DVD is starting to look sorta tasty? Almost worth buying? I've had alot of people in recently wondering about this particular toy. I've been (For the last YEAR) recomending that people wait. There's really no standard right now. This is a problem as a pile of companies are in a big pissing match over what standard will be... well.. THE standard. It harkens back to the old v.34 vs. HST, Beta Vs. VHS and most recently Kflex vs. x2 technology. All of these morons come up with their own way of doing things, and spend kerbillions of kerjillions of dollars doing marketing, R&D etc.... And then one side gets screwed large, and not always because they had the worse technology. Alot of it is simply what the market decides to go with, as well as pricing and avaliabilty. Beta owned VHS and HST owned v.34...... Oh well, at least the Kflex battled worked out for the best. :) Both sides got screwed by the new standard! Wait untill there is a clear winner in the market. It'd be a little annoying to go out and drop $800 on a DVDRAM to find out tomorrow that DVD-RW or DVD+RW is the new standard that everyone other than YOU is using.

If anyone happens to care I've got some new artwork up on my personal site. Take a boo.

Marauder out for the moment.

Really busy working on reviews and other stuff the last few days guys. Review for Emperor: Battle for Dune is almost ready to go, and here's a link to the fresh and tasty goodness of a World War II Online review. Check it out.

Hey all Marauder asked me to do a little review of GameSpy Arcade for you guys since well I'm like the only one from the Fragtopia Team that uses it. And I guess Dopper told me that I use it.
GameSpy Arcade has been out for a while and it's a pretty good little program from GameSpy. It does pretty much the same that GameSpy 3D does but does a little more and has different little features than GameSpy 3D. With GameSpy Arcade you have to register with them if your using the shareware version. And to register with the shareware is FREE!! Yes FREE!!. Here is a list of features.

Features Inculde in version 1.08c

  • Built in web browser of Arcade Daily (That being the homepage for GameSpy Arcade)
  • You can browse through some of the other planets ie. GameSpy Network or SportPlanet
  • Get files/patches and/or demos from Fileplanet.com
  • FREE Chat with other people either in a game room or in one of the planets
  • FREE Games like Chess or Hearts

With GameSpy Arcade you can do pretty much the same as GameSpy3d but GameSpy Arcade has little bit more features than GameSpy 3D. And one thing that I really like about it is that it supports Red Alert 2, though it's still in beta right now.

I would give this a good review and a good tool to use for you gamers out there who would like a little change or that would just like to test it out. Other than that it's pretty good tool to use and easy to use

Download GameSpy Arcade

Well I think thats about it

Hey all, just working on my system today, hax0ring up the interweb and such. Will post results of the latest venuture later today most likely.

Just got a nice letter from folks at WWII Online, talking a little bit about what happened with their launch, what they're working on ETC. It's a good read, click here to check it out.

Just got off the phone with Hatch from Playnet, the makers of the both wonderful and frustrating World War II online. I left a message with them this morning, asking for a quick call back. I was really surprised when I actually did a call back. Most gaming companies never call back cause.. well... they just don't care. These guys seem to. Nice guy to talk to, happy to talk about the game, their past.... What they were up to, and their plans for the future were........

I was typing like a mad man and... welll... MY STUPID COMPUTER RESET!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Hopefully he'll be nice and answer my email with more questions..... And if my computer survives this I'll post more news later.

Just got a quick review for the Dlink 701 & 704 DSL/Cable modem routers posted for those of you who're having problems with multiple IPs (Or don't want to pay for said IPs :) here's your solution!

World War II online servers are finally running semi stable and the game is playable! It still needs one hell of a lot of work, and I certainly wouldn't be paying $10 USD per month to play it in it's current state.. but the pay period has been put on hold for the moment, so we can play for free.... And it really is a fun game. I'll shortly be posting some screenies and a quick review. Incidentally, never EVER allow Kingpin to fly any plane you're in. He got his licence from the captain..... Captain Crunch that is. :))

Marauder out.

I was just doing some reading on the fragtopia web site and I saw I think here about how someone thinks that they can setup a BIG LAN Party in 2 weeks.. I think that's what it was.. Well I got one thing to say about that HAHAHAHAHA and have fun!! I was the Network Administrator for Fragtopia 2000 and Fragtopia 2(001) and well you need more than just one person to do that. I ran just the main file server that had the FTP, Web Server, IRC Server and was in charge of all the IPs and Internet for staff and planetquake.com I think I played 1 game and that was by myself and playing against a bot. Here's a run down of what I did and the times of my duties at Fragtopia 2(001). Thursday Night we got the Club Early so I went over and started setting up the main servers. I started that around 6pm worked on that till about 10pm. Stopped for a bit to do some other stuff. Woke up at the curling club on Friday at 8am. Worked on the main server (note this is only 1 computer) till about 8pm that night. Mostly all the little problems were gone.. Sat. got at the club at 8am and didn't leave until 10pm that night. And Sunday really I didn't do that much. So what I'm getting at is that you need more time to get everything setup and everything running right. It took me about 1 week to get the main server up and running with most of the problems fixed at home. But of course when stuff starts running you are going to run into problems no matter what.. Even if you think your the KING of servers and NT or Linux. YOU WILL RUN INTO PROBLEMS!! Trust me. Fragtopia is fun to run and help out and it takes a lot of time to get it running.. Your first year will be the worst but you learn from your mistakes. I did!!
Thats all I have to say!!
GezerMan going by now!!

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Ask anyone who knows me. I'm a nice guy. Maybe a little too nice at times. I didn't even want to string up the Dynamix dev team by sensitive parts of their anatomy when the Tribes 2 beta came out and we all rushed out and bought it.... Oh, I mean the final retail version which was buggy as crap... You know, that one....... I was even willing to forgive Mechwarrior 3 it's multiplayer bugginess.... now I'm mad tho.

I've bitched and complained multiple times about companies that release buggy software and companies that release games... that.. well... if it's multiplayer, your servers damned well better be able to handle the players you get on the first night of release.

I finally, after many many months of waiting got my hands on WWII Online. It's the story of a man, a huge army and a manical plan to take over the free world. World War 2 in other words. After downloading a 75 meg patch (!!) on the day of release and starting to play it was all good. I logged in, created an account and started to play. I spawned as a German infantryman (I just like playing nazis for some reason, dunno why.) And rode a tank into battle, sitting on the fenders with another nazi, yacking. We came over the hill and saw a few of our tanks shelling town... we began the infantry assault, backed by our tanks and aircraft. I capped a biznatch french defender and then.. got disconnected..... I go back to the website and I get this... and it's been like that ever since. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........

I hope it's going to be a good game, despite it's current limitations.... and I hope to find out in a few days when they unscrew their servers... until then I'm just going to sit here and look disgruntled.

Evidentaly there's a few other people annoyed.. Check out their forums. And here. And here's the letter from CRS explaning what the problem is.

Marauder out.

Oh no.. Wait, I have something else. I've recently been getting alot of emails and ICQs from people who want to hold a big LAN party. I have posted a FAQ with the questions that I seem to get asked the most. Check it out here.

Marauder out again.

Dopper
Finally got working on the fragtopia followup for the cs community can download fragtopia 2001 cs demos. There will be more added as we get them together. I'd like to get the cs bracket we used in the tournament from Dman so we can use that and you can just click whichever match bracket you want to see. It will happen soon, just have patience. If you have any demos from fragtopia, e-mail me and let me get my hands on them for the website. Also UT demos & Q3 demos should be up sometime soon as well. I "think" d0zer & ill techniques were in charge of UT & pappy-r from planetquake was doing Q3. I'll find out if they'll be posting demos of those events or if someone else wants to gather them up. Just remember that we're going to be busy getting all the photos, videos & demos together & posting them for the next week or so. That means updates to gaming news on this site might be slower than usual for a little bit longer.

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Wow. It's hard to believe it's actually over. After months of preparation and planning.... Hours and hours of setup..... 36 hours of hardcore gaming...... Some of the best games I've ever seen.. It's over..... In one way I'm glad it's over... In another way I'm sad. It was great to meet and talk to some of the guys I've talked with for so long, and too see so many guys (and gals!) having a good time..... but I'm sad that it's over for another year.....

Thanks to everyone who attended, you guys were a really great bunch, and some damned fine gamers.

Thanks to all the staff who put this thing together and made it work. I'm proud to call you my friends. It was great working with you all again!

Thanks to Pappy-R, Gizmo-Z, Will, Ash & Tippman from Planet Quake for a fine Quake III tourney. (And just being a cool buncha people!!)

Thanks to our sponsors.

Dlink and Startech provided us with some great networking equipment. The Dlink switches that were the backbone of the network gave most of the gamers sub 20 pings, and in the case of the Quake III 1 on 1's, we're talking about 3-9 ping on average. Absolutely phenominal.

AMK Services, Startech, PC Tote, Mouse Skatez, Logitech Canada and Digital Extremes provided us with some great prizes for the players. Thanks guys!

Sierra Canada came through and provided us with posters and CD holders for everyone at the party. It was great that no-one went home empty handed. They also provided us with Tshirts, Hats and software for our draws. Thanks guys. (We also snagged some cool interview footage with the Sierra rep. More on this later.)

Dairy Queen provided 20% off coupons for all gamers. Thanks John!

Rogers@home provided us with Internet connectivity and setup kits for prizes. Thanks Rob & Shirley-Ann!

Well, that's about it. Some of the party pics are up here for your viewing pleasure. We'll have more and the demos as soon as we get them all collected. :)

Thanks again guys. It was one hell of a party, and I look forward to it next year. (Oh god, it may kill me...... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

Marauder (ICQ #: 12419781)

Allrighty, the crisis appears to be over and everything SHOULD go smoothly. I thought we had untill Friday to get our DNS changes made...... Got a call on Monday morning informing me I had 45 minutes to go. ARGH! After a whole day of running around frantically, it's done and should work flawlessly. SHOULD being a big word in here. If we drop offline for a few hours, it's all good, don't sweat it. :)

Had an interesting question the other day. A guy who somehow found our site and has been reading it (And liked the content. Woot!) Wondered how many hits we get, and how much we make on the site.

First off, since December our average is around 7,000 hits/month. Not bad for a site that before December was getting under 2,000 hits a month. We've officially been doing news on the site for a year this month. Before then it was just occasional updates on what was happening with the 2000 big party. Take a look at the old news archives to see what I'm talking about.

As for making money at it: well, I have to confess that we make about a million times more than we did when we first started the site. Of course, we can all calculate what a million times nothing is. That's right. Nothing! FRAGtopia is actually paid for out of our own pockets. We've written over 800,000 words of news for FREE! Why?

Well... I'm not sure actually, but considering the way the market for banner advertisement has been going it's a damned good thing I'd say. We're still here and many major sites aren't. We own our own web server for business use, and FRAGtopia sits on there. You might say we're sponsored by VAM Computers Inc, since that's who the server actually belongs to. (Kingpin and myself.) On the other hand, I'd pay to have the server up and running out of my own pocket if I had to.

I like to write. I like to make comments on products and software. I like to post my opinion and see what other people think about it. I just plain enjoy doing this. It's not really a job (Like I said, I don't get a single red cent out of it.) it's a hobby, and one I really like. I also hate banner adverts and I think that has something to do with it.

You'll notice that some of the latest reviews have little logos at the top. A "brought to you by:" thing. I guess that's a banner advert. Those are people who have been kind enough to give us product for our big LAN party this year. Least we can do to help them out is mention their company around the site. Those ads don't bug me, they're small and don't animate. (I HATE animated banners.)

Anyhows, take a look at the Hit Meter if you care to. That's our hits, and we make no money.

Would I "sell out" and start accepting banner adverts like everyone else? Well, there's no REAL reason for us to.. I mean, we don't NEED the money to support the site. On the other hand if someone drove a dumptruck full of money up to my place and offered it to me..... Welll...in the imortal words of Krusty the Klown "Oh god... I'm not made of stone!!!!" :) I'd love to get paid for writing, but it's not likely to ever happen.

But!

If you happen to have a spare dumptruck (Or even a wheelbarrow) full of money you want to throw at us... I'm open to negotiations.

Marauder out.
