Hey all, just getting everything ready for the
journey to Smackdown. Getting my servers all ready,
my machine all preped (Yes, I AM going to get some games in.)
Picking up my folks van tonight, and picking up Rune as well.
Picking up Pappyz0r tomorrow morning at the train station
and then heading for the London Hilton to game game game!
WHOOOOOOTTT!
Regretably, Pappyz0r did inform me that apparently Rogers
informed Cableguy and crew that there will be no internet
for the party. Luckily I have an account with an ISP in London,
and Pappy has a laptop with a modem. So, working together
we can overcome adversity and post news. I'm not going to
bother uploading pictures, cause it's just going to be to
damned slow on dialup (yuck) but I'll be taking lots, and
the full writeup with pics will be up mid week next week.
I'm going to be very tired Monday I imagine, and unlike most
of my friends I have to go to work that day. ;) Cyah there!
Got a few pieces of news for you today, first off, I can't
WAIT to see Blade 2. Man the first one rocked
and this one looks sweet as well.
Got a few cool links in from England (Thanks Generator!)
like this: A
great, family based game that mom and dad can
enjoy along with the kids. Make sure to hide the bong well!
Also
in, this. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm disturbed
by it. Also, I'm dancing. Dah dah dah.. dah dah dah... dah
dah dah dah dah duh! duh!
Iceman sent me a link
to Xeofreestyle awhile ago, but I can't remember
if I posted it. If not, check their site. Such sweet flashage
and tunage.
In from Darksiege. You think YOU'VE moded your machine out?
Hah! Not untill you've added
a Window to your hard drive! This is cool, but
uh.... Very, very, very likely to kill the drive as far as
I'm concerned.
While poking around online cartoons last night (Well, I wasn't
I don't know how I found this.. But I did.) Check
out Warp 9 to Hell. These guys just slay me. God
they are funny. I especially liked the "Holy crap it's
Jesus!" line :)
Look for more news tomorrow night, from Pappy's room @ the
LAN. And if you can, get your sorry ass down there and join
us!

God I hate ATI. A customer is having a problem with an Ali
mobo and a TV Wonder. Apparently ATI cards (suprise) have
an issue with this board. No problem, do everything they suggest..
Doesn't work. Try to contact them via phone. Busy signals
all afternoon. Tried to Email support@ati.com. Comes back
with an automated message saying "Check out FAQs!"
Go thru their "email tech support" link, which has
apparently been improved to better serve you.. and guess what?
No email options in there that I can find, everything leads
to another FAQ. That didn't help you? FAQ off! Stupid ATI.
LAN PARTY LAN PARTY LAN PARTY! Smackdown smackdown! Getting
all geared up for the big Smackdown weekend LAN at the Hilton
in London, Ontario. Not going yet? Whatsamatta fo' you? Click
here for all the details, and to sign your ass up! Runez0r
and myself (Along with Symplicite, who won't be playing, but
is driving, bless her little heart.) are going to pick up
the infamoose Pappy-R down at the train station and then hit
the Part-ahy. Should be an excellent weekend, and I'm much
looking forward to it. I've never actually been to a big LAN
party to play before, so this should be cool. Going to have
coverage of the event on the site here, as well as a cam up
all weekend at FRAGtopia.com/maraudercam
so be sure to drop by and check it out. I'm also bringing
some prizes to give away, and a few servers to lord over,
as is my wont. I'm thinking of holding
a Jumpman challenge on the 'ol C64 emulator. Beat
me at Jumpman (Come on Goshwin. You know you want to TRY.)
win a prize. Or a kick in the teeth, I'm not sure which. It
will definately however be one of the two.
Please note that all
Pappy-R fan boys will be severely beaten by Rune
and Myself if The Great One is disturbed with questions like
"When you invented Quake did the world come into existance?",
"Why do you hang around with this Marauder loser.",
or "What are you doing to that goat?" You know,
those sorts of Karma distrurbing things.
That's all the news I'm going to post today. I have more,
but I'm in too much of a hurry to post it. Work work. (gah)

| Mar 11.2002 - Background, simgolf... |
| posted by: Marauder

Well, I've been playing a little Simgolf lately. Not bad.
But you know what? After 4 days, I'm pretty bored with it,
and I broke it already. :( I dunno, it's an interesting little
game, and maybe if you're more of a Sim and Golf fan than
myself you'd enjoy it more. Personally I hate Golf, and I
hate the Sims. The only think I ever enjoyed in the Sims was
creating serial killers, and burning down the house around
the little bastards. Usually at the same time. What I was
really disapointed with about Simgolf was the inability to
actually get right down on the ground and play... you know,
like stand behind your play, wind'er up and wack the ball.
Also, the graphics suck. More in the review in a day or so.
(And no, I couldn't figure out how to make a serial killer,
burn anything/one down, and I was completely unable to locate
anything resembling a gun or weapon of any sort. The closest
I could come was ordering my groundkeepers to viciously exterminate
dandilions...
I was screwing around with Photoshop last night, and came
up with a FRAGtopia background for those of you who are really
bored. I just needed a little something for my desktop for
Smackdown, and figured I'd post it here. It's simple, it's
dull, but it'll do. ;) Download
it by right clicking HERE and chosing "save
as" Have a nice day. Thanks to the drunken
world of Donut911 (Keir!) for the donation of
the grenade graphic I'm going to use for everything from now
on, including my boxers. He made the grenade, I added a happy
face and made it funny. It'll also be used for rating games,
our logo, cooking meals and yes, even painting walls and web
design. In other excellent news, we suspect that Keir may
have actually had sex with someone other than himself, which
is why the 'nade was delayed several days.
The inital reason for the 'nade was so I could do a rating
system on reviews. I've been going over some of the refering
sites for our reviews, and visiting them. Apparently when
I called Renegade "A frustrating mess" and suggested
that people buy another game... One that works, quite a number
of Renegade fan sites see this as a "75%", "90%"
and "Positive" review. Now, it may be just my poor
grasp of English, not being from England and all... but that
does NOT sound like a positive review to me. So just to be
sure, I've added a rating of 60% to the review. 3 outta 5
'nades. (60%)
Speaking of Smackdown, we're less than a week
away from peparing to journey to London for the LAN party.
It's a three day event, held at the Hilton (oooohhhhhh!) and
it's a puny $45 for the weekend. I'm looking forward to it.
Won't be playing in any of the tournaments, but I am bringing
my own server, so there'll be some Wolfenstien and Renegade
LAN action going on all weekend, as well as covering the event.
Look for lots of photos, as well as news posts during the
weekened.
My wife is dragging me off on Sunday apparently, but Friday
and Saturday I'll be there. Oh yeah. Alot of the local guys,
and many who attended the two FRAGtopia events are going as
well, from the looks of it. If you see anyone in a FRAGtopia
Tshirt, come on over and say "HI!" I'm bringing
along some stuff for donation to the Smackdown effort as well.
Found some cool linkage. First off, I know there's quite a
few people out there still playing Total Annihilation.. Which
according to ME is the greatest frickin' RTS to ever bless
our screens with it's presence, despite being... Well... Ancient.
I believe it came out in... 1997 or '98..... And it still
Rocks.... There's
a Battletech mod for it. Woot! I love, LOVE TA,
and I really love the 'Mechwarrior universe. So here's something
that combines it for y'all.
Hey, forget having people donate money or advertising to your
site! Have them donate
Oral Sex! Oh yeah baby, this is WHERE the future
of online support is going!
It always amazes me how hard the guys at Lucasfilm work on
their background stuff. Check this page out for all
the stuff inside the Death Star. Shesh you know,
you'd think after the first one they'd have learned eh? When
i build my Death Star, it will be truly invulnerable to attack!
It's papermache armor and coridors will be impervious to everything
other than water. I'm hoping the Rebel Alliance won't learn
of it's one weakness. Don't tell anyone, or I'll be forced
to kill you.
Got an email in from Twisted
Metal Case Mods, asking for donations/items for
review. :) Didn't hear back from them when I explained that
I ran a review site, and anything I got my hot little hands
on stayed there and got posted on my own site. Ah well, check
their site out, it's very sweet. I also found
this link off their site. Wow. This guy is a bloody
Rembrandt of case modification! Never seen anything like that!
Dunno if I mentioned this, but Loki
Games is dead as hell. They're the guys making
the game conversions for Linux. I wondered when it would happen.
Not if, when.
Now, far be it from me to criticise (hah!) but most linux
users I know aren't willing to pay for anything. Not to mention
there's not all that many of them, when compared to main stream
Windows gamers, and Linux just isn't a user friendly OS. It's
getting alot better... but untill there's one version of Linux,
and it's as easy to use as Windows... And SOMEONE spends a
few billion on marketting, it ain't gonna happen.
This is so damned cool. A VR journey through the great
pyramid of Khufu. Man, I'd love to visit in real
life... But if you can't, here's the next best thing.
I've been getting alot of emails lately from people looking
for hosting. We do provide hosting, mostly for people that
I like. ;) You also really have to have a gaming related site,
and put work into it. Don't ask me for hosting if you're going
to quit when you realise how much work it is to do a good
site, and keep it updated. I'm not interested in wasting my
time or yours. Also, as I mentioned.. We're a gaming site.
We give hosting to gaming related material.
I have no idea who sent me this.. but... Well, must be nice
to have money to burn. Look
at the size of that bastard. Sorry man, but I
wouldn't pay $100 for one of those cards. At least Iceman
wasn't in on the bidding, that i know of.
Anyhows, I think that's enough for today. I'm the hell outta
here. (Off to work, HAH HAH!)

I was reading some stuff the other day about "violence
and video games" and stumbled across the Media
Family website. Being a complete prick of course
I had to cause some trouble, and hopefully amuse myself at
the same time. (Not a hard thing to acomplish really.) So
I sent in this:
Greetings,
I was just reading the little article on your site regarding
children playing Video games. I have recently become concerned
with my child David. We've always supported him in his interest
in computers, but since he's discovered games like Quake and
Doom, he seems to spend most of his time in his room playing
them online against other people on the internet. My wife
and I are increasingly concerned that this sort of thing may
cause violent behavior, and perhaps even turn him towards
drugs and alchol as he seeks more and more to escape reality.
We're looking for help, are there any resources you can suggest?
Thank you for your time,
Mar Audr Zor

And I got this in reply:
I have attached a research study that we did here at the
Institute. I hope it helps. You can also find good information
in our Research Library on our web site at www.mediafamily.org

Morning y'all. Just a few little links today, including this
cat photo from G256. Never before in my life have I seen such
an unhappy looking creature. This cat is my new
mascott. And this one has to be the
world's happiest cat. Perhaps it ate the first
one when it saw how miserable it was.
Also
in from Generator... Well... I'm not
going to hire this guy to lay any bricks here
at FRAGtopia, unless I'm bored, have a video camera and want
something to submit to "Canada's Funniest Home Accidents."
Shesh.
Again
we see that the guys
at MIT have too much time on thier hands... On
the other hand this would be frickin' sweet to take to a LAN
party, and would either attract or horrify the ladies. And
that ends our Generator related news for today. Thanks as
always man. It's nice to hear from folks in the old country.
Huh, and here you thought your telescope was the ultimate
device for spying on that hot neighbor of yours? Think again,
Ultrawideband
0wnz j00... Now I don't know about you guys, but
the number of microwave ovens, cell phones, the monitor I
stare at all day, and all the other radiation emiting things
out there already make me nervous. (I'm convinced we'll all
be dead of cancer eventually 'cause of this stuff...) I hardly
think we need something like this to add to it.
I got a huge kick out of this site I found (link from POTD
on Planetquake.)
Apparently the reason I haven't been cheating when I play
online games is not honor or integrity... Apparently I'm just
too
god damned stupid to cheat. Gather round my children,
and listen to the words of wisdom emiting from Dingle. He's
not only smart, he's handsome, and the ladies love him! If
only I'd realised years ago that cheating is actually the
smart thing to do. The fun I've been missing, the friends
I could have gained... Opportunities lost.
I'm wondering when Planetcnc.com
is going to post
my review of Renegade. I'm guessing they likely
won't be. :) It's always a shame when fan sites only tell
you the good things about a game, and never the bad. Not really
doing their reading public much good in my opinion.
And now, it's time for some old
sk00l news. Anyone else remember an old game called
Starflight? Wow, it was indeed some good old sk00l sweetness.
Well, Starflight
Invasion is seeking to bring those days back again.
Also, I can't remember if I posted this one, but our buddies
from Outworld are back, they've long since shelved
Outworld and are working on a game called Alien
Me, along the same lines.
Found a sweet link to Amiga sites and information. Amiga:
Mother Of All Systems. If you're an Amiga fanatic
like me, take a boo. Pretty buff. (Shut up Prae.)
Also, here's a list (well, they're trying to compile one,
and doing a damned good job so far that I can see.) of all
the games ever released for the Comodore 64. Wow.
I have to keep downloading, my collection is not yet complete.
:)
Heh. An interesting article about skins
posted on Winamp, and the people who run them
down. STFU STFD!
And one last little link, if you like trance, check
out Aura: The Source Of Trance. Wow. 1.8 million
plays and they kick some serious ass. Woops, never mind...
they're over 1.9 million now... and i only found them a few
days ago. Impressive.

well.. Sorta... I mean, it was certainly one of the most frustrating

| Mar 04.2002 - Marauder is on a cranky spree! |
| posted by: Marauder
icq# 12419781 |
|
I hurt my back last night, and I'm in a lot of pain right
now. As such, I'm in no mood to post news that scrap pilfering
little grabasses such as yourself will fail to appreciate
the humor and wit in anyhows. So here's a few brief things:
First off, we've all played the Warcraft 3 beta right? I mean
even God and Bin Laden have their own Battle Net servers running
by this time. I asked Blizzard for an opinion on this.
We said:
Greetings, I run a news/review site (FRAGtopia.com) and recieved
a screenshot from a report from a reader regarding the number
of pirated Beta copies of Warcraft III, and huge (one had
over 8,000 listed accounts) pirate servers that are up and
running. I was just wondering, if someone there had time to
comment on the situation for me. Thanks for your time!
They said:
Hello,
Certain programs have been developed that allow users to
bypass Battle.net's CD-Key authentication process. This directly
promotes software piracy by allowing users who have illegitimately
obtained our games to play them as if they had been legitimately
acquired. Furthermore, because these programs allow access
without a valid CD-Key, they render malicious users unaccountable,
thereby eliminating Blizzard's ability to protect legitimate
customers. Therefore, Blizzard has taken an aggressive stance
opposing the use of these programs.
Many customers have expressed dissatisfaction over not being
randomly selected for the Warcraft III Beta. The primary purposes
of the Beta are to get play-balance feedback and to test our
Battle.net servers. Our servers are not being tested if people
are playing on rogue servers. Additionally, the Warcraft III
Beta is not intended to be a product demo. When testing ends,
we need the ability to terminate the Beta's functionality.
Rogue servers eliminate our ability to expire beta versions
of our products. Remember, Battle.net is a free service that
does not directly allow the distribution of viruses or allow
someone to steal your account information.
Some customers feel that this is an attack on the Linux community,
which is untrue. Although Blizzard currently does not develop
for the Linux platform, we are keeping an eye on the progress
of Linux and may change in the future. We encourage total
conversions of our games for personal use as long as they
do not infringe upon the End User License Agreement included
in our games, nor the rights of any other parties including
copyrights, trademarks or other rights.
We want to preserve our high level of quality and continue
to create the finest products, therefore we must protect our
intellectual property rights. Software piracy needs to be
combated at all levels, and at Blizzard we intend to do our
part to fight piracy and the illegal distribution of copyrighted
media.
Refer to this link for more information: http://www.blizzard.com/legalfaq.shtml
Thanks Tim. We wub j00. The game looks and plays great, or
so we've heard. Keep up the great work.
Gezerman seems to be the only person in the world who's not
having any problems running Renegade. This may because he's
sleeping with Westwood, so they're keeping his game running
smoothly. I posted this on their forums last night, had a
crap load of replies. Looks like someone deleted the post
today tho. Ahhh well. I thought it was pretty well written.
Hell, I even used sentances, and didn't call them f(*&(g
idiots who released an incomplete, buggy game.
We said:
Welcome to the pay per play Beta of Command n' Conquer your
pocket book: Renegade. For the honor of beta testing this
game for us, you will pay $65 Canadian. That's right, it's
an expensive game, which may or may not work. I'm working
on a review for this one right now, for fragtopia.com. One
of my reviews usually gets several thousand reads within the
first few days of release. So far, there's going to be several
thousand people unlikely to buy this game.
Test system specs: Athlon XP 1700+, ASUS A7V266e mobo, 512
meg DDR, geforce 3 (latest official drivers, also tried the
good old 12.41s) SB live! Value.
Here's my list of bitches so far, I'd be interested to hear
what everyone thinks/has experianced:
1) Extrememely frequent crashes to desktop (CTD) I HATE CTD.
Renegade is CTD'ing on me several times an hour, and generally
I have to load the game 3-4 times to actually get it any further
than the initial video reset. I even tried running the game
in Win98 compat mode, won't run at all like that.
2) Unground shadows. Ever notice that a plane or chopper
will fly over a tunnel you are in.. and the shadow hovers
over you? (Interesting that the shadows sometimes also follow
you around.... Smart AI, very good ears?)
\3) You are unable to change your video options in game.
This is annoying, as if you're tweaking you have to change,
load, change load.... Stupid.
4) Sound effects just suddenly stop. (Ex. I'm running around
in a tank... suddenly the tank is silent.... it just floats
I guess... Or the gun sounds stop.. but everything else continues...
Reload, problem solved.)
5) You can't skip the in game movies.
6) If you screw up a save game, and then chose "restart level"
it doesn't remember which gear you entered the level with.
It gives you a default load out. On some of the maps (Ex.
Oblisk) you REALLY need those extra Ion and rocket rounds
to kill the vehicles. I was then unable to beat the level
untill I remember the autosave, thank god it worked. Stupid.
7) I'd like NOT to be able to switch to out of ammo weapons
thanks. (This gets me killed quite a bit, considering when
I hit '2' to pull out my chaingun, i have to cycle thru my
little assault rifle.. which is usually out of ammo....)
8) I don't have a mouse in game untill I hit a movement key..
then my mouse works.
9) The AI is dumb as dirt, unless they're set up in an abvious
ambush position.
10) I got yelled at for shooting a chef in the first mission
you run into them.. Apparently that "friendly" was trying
to kill me.. but that didn't matter.
11) Can't logon to Westwood Online. For some reason (I've
forgotten my password) it's not sending me the email with
my password.
12) Does anyone else find it annoying that you can't aim
way up with the vehicle guns without your hull blocking the
view? Bad design on Westwood's part.
Needless to say, I REALLY think Westwood (*coughEA*cough*should
have kept this one in studio a little longer.
Welp, I'm off to feel sorry for myself.

it's buggy. |

Well, got Renegade. Playing it, and it's fun. That's the good
news. The bad news? (News is like the battle between evil
and good.. you can't have one without the other.)
Wow.
This game has some issues to sort out. First off there's the
nasty Crash To Desktop problems that I was having with the
demo. They're back, and they're VERY annoying. The program
also has some sort of an issue with Webcam32, and if it's
running... CTD. Load a game. CTD. Try to join multiplayer...
CTD. Playing along happily, CTD. CTD CTD CTD. Really, really
annoying. You also can't skip in game movies, the AI is generally
dumb as dirt unless set up in a good ambush position, and
oh yeah.. I'm on a level with tons of vehicles. I've got tons
of nice high power weapons with which to deal with said vehicles...
but I accidentally saved the game at a stop where I die instantly..
(Somehow... I actually saved about 20 seconds before I died..
But the game decided to kill me when I load....) so I hit
the "restart level" button.. Oh it restarts you
allright. But not with the weapons you had when you entered
the level. Rather it gives you a very basic loadout. Very
nice, and the level is now almost impossible to beat, I've
tried it something like 15 times in the last few minutes.
You just can't destory vehicles fast enough without the proper
equipment. Yay......
Perhaps there's something wierd with my machine... But I
don't have these problems with any other game.... And this
one got MUCH worse after the patch.

Looks like the xbox is getting
a new controller. The zany marketing guys have
named it the "S controller" despite the fact that
there seems to be no reason for it whatsoever (maybe it's
a model number or something?). At any rate this is cause for
celebration for xbox junkies as it seems to fix the wacked
button placement of the original controllers and it is a little
smaller in size.
PC Games over in germany has just
released a short movie of the gameplay in Counter-Strike

it shows off a bit of what you can expect in this new single

Seems
like AMD doesn't want their new processors being overclocked
so they have been doing extra damage to cut the little bridges

used to overclock so nicely and for such a cheap price. Though

is one guy that will not be stopped by amd's feeble attempts
to stop us from our dreams.
Here's
one for the pet lovers, make sure you teach your pets what
not to fetch, ya know just incase you end up in the hospital
or something ;)
Now this
stuffs freaking cool, imagine your sitting in front of your
desk fraggin some lamer for the past couple hours, your bored,
your huge flat monitor looks boring, well want to play all
your games in REAL 3d? or should I say, volumetric display.
Check out this
sweet article on how one company could make this possible.
Well
I guess I better have some sort of explanation for my news
title, no I'm not trying to relive the early 90's of MC Hammer,
I was referring more to the closely kept under wraps cpu that
AMD has been working on. The Hammer is AMDs answer to the
64bit world of cpus, still using the 'ol x86 architecture,
this one is sure to turn a few heads. No real specs on it
so we'll have to wait closer to the release date to find anyting
out, but you can read a few small tid bits here.
Uhh yea,
hey I know pcmods are a big thing now, and I'm into them too...
but isn't this
a little odd? well actually kinda cool if you can get everything
to fit.
Anyways
don't want to take up to much more space, rune will be posting
later on today.l8r.

27.2002 - RPG Madness, baby!

First off today, I have some great links from Shiloh, uber
cutie and all around nice grrl. She's hooked me up with Progress
Quest, a wonderfull RPG that takes all the best parts of a
Traditional Role playing game, and carefull pares away all
the rancid peel micromanagment and walking around, leaving
behind only the tasty core of fighting, geting items and gold,
and leveling your tin plated ass up. It's the ultimate expression
of computer role playing. You
are to be checking it out HERE, thank you.
Also
from Shiloh comes Dr.
Vulture's Laboratory of evil. Just look at the
guy on the intro page. Man, that's just EVIL incarnate. The
eyes, and the hair. I'm scared, and he's only a JPG... Mind
you, as Planet Romero has proven in the past, with some hair
and an image editor, you can pack a whole lotta evil into
a .JPG.
Need
that little extra edge in your gaming? That little something
to push you to new levels? Well, now we know Machaveli's
secret. Yes indeed, here it is.
One last
Shiloh related piece of news.... Hello
Mittens.
In from
iLL Techneeqs we've got a few things, coolest of all is this
sweet clock. Stick in as your active background,
never wonder what time it is again. Also, if you've ever wondered
what
a CD aimbot looks like in action, wonder no more.
And as a last piece of news, don't you wish that stupid
n00b would just STFU? Thanks for all the linkage
iLL :)
LOL!
There's nothing I like better than a good Sonique Skin, unless
it's Camp Chaos cartoons. Well! Kingpin
just found the thing that ties them both together
in an orgy of hillarity.
From Krage comes some not-so-shocking news that... Well, I've
been telling you this for years.. They're
everywhere!
Also just in, comes the fate of Rune one day.... I just know
it's going to happen. He's at a LAN party, when
suddenly he snaps.... He was always such a quiet
gamer... Never said much in chat... In the same vein, watch
out! Your kids
could be... playing games! (insert dramatic
musical score here.) Somehow I'm guessing that "Making
punk bitches suck it down" in Quake III is not the "Quality
video/computer game playing" of which they speak.
Personally
I love this line: "Feelings of mastery occur in a video
world that is not real. Playing violent games may contribute
more to aggressive behavior than passively watching television."
Yeah, there's nothing quite like staring mindlessly at a stupid
televison for hours on end. Just to prove these people wrong,
I went over to their head office and kicked all their asses,
screaming "Duke for President!" the whole time.

Hey all, and welcome. I posted a little review of the CnC
Renegade demo, check
it out here. I tried the new patch out tonight,
and I'm happy to report that.. Boss, boss, zee lag zee lag!
IS MUCH BETTER! One hell of a lot better actually. Damned
good thing with the entire game only a few days away from
retail release.... You'll see a review on it about a week
after it comes out.
Runez0r just sent me this. I must say I've never
EVER set my computer on fire. Oponents in Wolf, yes. Computer,
no. I found this quite funny:
"There
are two phases to Net rage - it starts in the mind then becomes
physical, with shaking, eyes dilating, sweating, and increased
heart rate. You are preparing to have a fight, with no one
to fight against. That can have harmful longer-term effects."
That
sounds more like Rune and Goshwin playing LAN games, not like
Net rage. They just forgot the uncontrolable cursing, convulsing
and foaming at the mouth. I told Rune we're going to tape
him and make an outake video. He warned
me off gently.
Huh. Seems
Blizzard is a little annoyed about people pirating
the beta of Warcraft III. Not that I'd EVER stoop to something
so low myself, but I got a real good look at some hours of
gameplay the other day, and wow. Wonderfull graphics, great
sayings and animations, and sweet, sweet menus..... And no
crashes that I could see. Very, very nice work Blizzard! I
can hardly wait to get my hands on it when it comes out. I
found it quite amusing to see that the Battlenet code got
leaked as well, so there's tons of huge servers pirate up
and running. (The one I saw had over 8,000 registered users,
with over 900 playing at 3 in the afternoon. :) I asked Blizzard
for an official comment on this situation, but they've never
gotten back to me.. Ahhh well, the price of being small I
guess.
Dopper
always swore that he'd never, EVER pay to play a game online...
DAOC proved that wrong.. But we talked about something interesting.
What if companies charged per month, but allowed you to download
the game? That'd be a sweet deal. Well, check
out Mimesis Online. A MMPORG that does just that.
And looks like it might be pretty sweet as well!
Just
got an email from the lads over at Laser
Squad Nemesis.... They were kind enough to donate
a few accounts so we could do a review of their game. We're
working on it as we speak. (Interestingly enough, this is
the first time anyone's ever actually ASKED us to review anything.
I'm all impressed.) It's a turn based strategy game that...
Is played VIA email. Interesting, no? Cost for the game is
$30 USD per year... Quite reasonable for something that you
can play quickly. I mean VERY quickly at work. ;) Not of course
that ANY of us play games at work. *gasp*
Woohoo! After an 8 year abscence, ZZap64! Magazine is back.
Back in the day, ZZap was a review/news mag for the C64. Check
this link out. Pretty shweet.

22, 2002 - Xbox Japan Launches

Well today was the day that Japanese xbox junkies have been
looking forward to for months. Yes, that's right, the xbox
was just released in Japan and so far it seems to be doing
very well. Have a look here at Console War for pics
of some of the launch frenzy. Take a look at some of the lineups.
Those
wacky Japanese will do anything
for games. The marketing
blitz
has apparently been going on for months over there.;-)
If you thought that the Japanese were nuts you should head
over to HardOCP and check out the water
cooling xbox action that they have going on over
there. Definately not for the faint of heart... I wonder if
they'll figure out how to overclock it next?
Oh and contrary to what the Inquirer
is saying reports from Japan say that the new Japanese xbox
controllers will work with the american version of the console.
Getting
ready to enjoy that new DVD on your computer with Windows
Media Player? There's something that you might
want to know.
Well the people at Transgaming (the people behind the WINE
windows emulator for Linux) have just put up word that they've
managed to get Max
Payne running under Linux with WINE ! This comes
as good news for Linux gamers as previously the game has only
been playable under DirectX 8.1 on Windows (along with the
console versions of the game of course).
"We're
very excited about these advances and the ability for a
game the calibre of Max Payne to function on Linux, "
explains TransGaming's CEO and CTO Gavriel State. "While
the game isn't 100 percent yet, these developments demonstrate
how rapidly our team is able to add support for new multimedia
APIs. As we refine our technology, gamers can expect to
be able to play more and more top-rated games on Linux."
Tom's Hardware takes a look at the current state of OpenGL
2.0. Has it fallen behind it's DirectX counterpart? Can it
make a support resurgance with 3D card vendors? What is it's
future role as a hardware and vendor independant API? Inquiring
minds want to know. Find out the answers to these and more
of your burning questions right over here.

21, 2002 - Today's news brought to you by the letter "E,
F, G and sometimes Rune"!

Hey all, and welcome to today's news post. Had any luck getting
Renegade to work? You know, it's an amazing game and TONS
of fun... If you're not lagged out.... Getting dropped after
5 minutes (most common problem.)... Crashing to Deskop (Gotta
love CTDs!) etc etc. Two patches have come out, and they don't
seem to have resolved any of the issues I'm having. Everyone
is of course bitching, but hey, it's free, it's a demo. Lightening
up. There were, as an interesting note, 3,800 people playing
this demo last night on Mplay...*Cough* Gamespy Arcade...
There were 4 people playing the Serious Sam 2 demo :)
Quick
news in from Rune, apparently the Aussies
are sick of being ignored, and the blighters have
done something about it!
Ever
wondered just how much Cliff
REALLY hates you? Eagle linked us to Something
Awful's video game. Now you know. Hmmm. Hedge Clippers.
Frost
posted a link on the forums to the Xtreme
Gaming Network LAN party in California. If you
happen to be down there, you might wanna attend. Take a look
at the site anyhows, great flash intro. :)
Wow.
Just checking up on the No
More AOL CD's site that Generator256 (Our corespondent
from England) send me a while back. Seems they're getting
along swimmingly! 14,896 AOL CDs collected so far. Give you
hundreds of coasters and skeets to a good cause. Hey, they
don't even mind if you mangle them first!
Speaking
of Generator (as we were one sentance back, if you recall.)
there's 3,800 people on playing Renegade, I jump on a server
with 20 guys.. and look
who should run by in front of me.... Our favorite
limey, Generator himself. How's that for a wierd co-inky-dink?
And I mean, his ping would have been CRAP to a North American
server. It's a small virtual world, after all.. it's a small
virtual world after all... (Come on everybody!)
Heleos is apparently a l33t hax0r, as you can
see by this link. I just love the little Wizard that pops
up. :)
Goshwin
sends in some linkage. First off, some info
on Aimbots for UT, how they work, how to know
if someone is lame enough to use one. (*cough*yrunsob*cough*)
Secondly, I've seen cases light up.. But
this baby LIGHTS up. And then there's the
case mod that REALLY makes you computer purr.
Marauder
out, back to work. :)

18, 2002 - Today's news brought to you by the letter "D"!

Well looks like it's confirmed, Rune and myself, along with
a bunch of the other local guys, will be attending the Smackdown
2002 big LAN in London, Ontario. Check
their site out here, looks like it's going to
be a kick ass party!
We're currently working on a few reviews, but have gotten
side tracked by stupid CnC Renegades. Should soon have up
review for: Empire Earth (Finally.), Darkened Skye (You collect
skittles.. Yes Skittles.... As in the rainbow off fruit candy
stuff?), Serious Sam 2, the Trackpod and the aformentioned
Renegade demo.
And now for today's news. New in from Racoon (Thanks man!)
that the Amish
have actually come into the modern age, and are
now using laptops. Man. Amazing what you can do with wood
when you put your mind to it, eh?
Lol. Darksiege sent me in a clever little redirect awhile
ago, remember the Microsoft.com "How to Read the Fucking
Manual (RTFM)" thing? Check
out the site now. Stupid No sense of humor MS.
A few
pieces of news in from our trusty and noble friend Dman, first
off, do
you REALLY trust Microsoft to do security right
after all these years of screwing it up? (hah!) and
secondly, Lindows..... In theory these guy's little
remake of the Linux GUI will allow you to run all your Windows
software under a Linux Kernal. Looks to me like they're just
messing around with WINE......
Dopper sent in a few interesting links a bit ago, and I have
yet to post them. Sorry man, here they are. First off, a really
cool site from Tahnlu
J. FreeStyler: Tehcno Paladin of the Future. And
a little something I've been messing around with for a bit,
the
Truelaunch bar. It's a very, VERY sweet little
util that puts popup menus on your quickstart bar. It's nice
to have everything organized neatly, and I'm not quite sure
how I lived without it.
Thanks
to Doug for the news that Hercules
is starting to make ATI cards... It's interesting,
I wonder if this had anything to do with that lovely internal
leaked memo from nVidia basically calling the Hercules guys
idiots. (That's how I read it anyhows...) Hercules..... and
Gigabyte has apparently dropped nVidia in favor of ATI as
well... Those are two major powers in the computer industry,
it'll be interesting to see how it all comes out in the wash.
Dragon sent in a link to the Digital
Film Festival. Wow, some really sweet computer
generated films in here guys, take a boo.
Anyhows,
enough news for today. :) Marauder out.
